What is Interpretation

The process of understanding a spoken message in one language and re-expressing that message accurately and objectively in another language.

Interpretation is complex. To be accurate and objective requires not just an excellent command of the languages involved, but also an understanding of the cultural nuances, as well as knowledge of the subject matter being interpreted.

How it works

Get in touch with us and describe your situation. You will be paired with a certified interpreter based on the language needs, and the topic being discussed.

If the discussion will be of a technical nature, be prepared to provide the interpreter with any technical preparatory material beforehand. This might include a glossary of specialized terminology, any depositions, or other pertinent documentation.

Consecutive Interpretation

In Consecutive Interpretation, the interpreter works in both language directions. First the interpreter waits for one party to finish speaking, then the message is interpreted and expressed to the other party in their native language. This mode of interpreting is suitable for:

  • Court proceedings
  • Business meetings
  • Investigative interviews
  • Small group visits

Simultaneous Interpretation

With simultaneous interpretation, the interpreter listens, interprets, and reproduces the message all at once. The interpretation occurs in real-time as the speaker continues to communicate. CIS linguists can accurately and objectively interpret from one language into another (unidirectional) or back and forth between languages (bi-directional).

Simultaneous interpretation requires the interpreter to listen, analyze, comprehend, convert, edit, and reproduce in real time from the source language to the target language while a speaker continues to speak in a specific social context.  The interpretation may be from one language into another only (unidirectional) or back and forth between languages (bi-directional).
